Tuesday, August 25, 2026 - Human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, has stated the reason she declined the House of Representatives ticket offered her under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, for the 2027 general elections.
In an interview on Symfoni TV, Yesufu said her decision to
reject the offer was based on matters of principle, adding that various
political offers were made contingent upon specific conditions which she
refused to accept.
She said that people do not seek power by force, noting that
she is not ready to compromise her integrity over anything.
“I did not accept the House of Representatives
ticket that was given to me because there were other people who were doing it
on the issue of principle. There were many issues where many people brought ‘I
will make you this but you have to do A, B, C, D. It’s pretty obvious.
“We are not going to sell Nigeria. I
don’t have to be president by force. We won’t make any promises that we will
not fulfill,” she said.
The national leader of the NDC, Seriake Dickson, had said
that he and the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, offered Aisha Yesufu
a House of Representatives ticket, but she turned it down.
