Monday, August 24, 2026 - Four persons have been hospitalised following a clash between suspected rival cult groups in the Ewu area of Oshodi, Lagos State, during an Isese Day celebration.
The incident occurred on Thursday, while the celebration was
ongoing in the community.
A source in the community who spoke on condition of
anonymity said the trouble started when members of two rival groups allegedly
confronted one another at the venue of the event.
The source said, “The programme was going on peacefully
before the fight started. At first, it looked like a minor disagreement, but it
suddenly escalated, and the two groups started fighting.”
Another resident said the situation became more violent when
some of the suspected cultists started brandishing dangerous weapons.
He said, “It was during the Isese programme that the fight
started. We could not immediately understand what caused it, but the two groups
were fighting each other.
“Four people were injured during the fight. One of the
injured persons was stabbed in the face. They all ended in the hospital where
they are currently receiving treatment.”
The incident was said to have caused panic in the community
as residents and passersby scampered for safety.
Meanwhile, an anti-cultism platform, Naija Confra, in a post
seen by our correspondent on Saturday, stated that the clash reportedly
involved Eiye cultists.
It stated that the suspected cultists were from the Mafoluku
and Ewu areas of the community.
“Some Eiye cultists from Mafoluku had reportedly gone to Ewu
for the Isse Festival, where an issue was reported between Eiye cultists from
both sides, leading to a clash in which serious injuries were reported.
“Naija Confra obtained a video showing a man said to be from
Ewu, whose face was seriously damaged. His current condition is unknown.
Everyone is advised to stay safe out there,” the platform stated.
The cause of the clash remained unclear as of the time of
filing this report.
Efforts to get the reaction of the Lagos State Police
Command on the incident were ongoing as of press time.
