Monday, August 24, 2026 - A dispatch rider has been killed after two trucks reportedly collided while their drivers were battling for the right of way at Ijesha, inward Mile 2, Lagos.
The fatal multiple road accident occurred on Saturday,
August 22, 2026, with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA,
Eagle Response Team responding promptly to the scene.
According to a statement by LASEMA, the accident involved a
FAW truck with registration number T-30364LA, an Iveco truck with registration
number KSF 958 XV, and a dispatch rider.
Preliminary findings by the Eagle Response Team showed that
the crash was caused by reckless driving and wrongful use of the road by both
truck drivers.
The FAW truck was said to have hit the Iveco truck while the
two vehicles were struggling for the right of way. The impact caused the Iveco
truck to hit the dispatch rider from behind. The dispatch rider died in the
crash.
Following the incident, officers of the Nigeria Police Force
from the Okota Division evacuated the remains of the deceased and deposited
them at the morgue for identification and further necessary procedures.
LASEMA said the two trucks were subsequently moved to a
designated layby off the main carriageway to restore normal traffic flow and
prevent further obstruction along the road.
Responders at the scene included the Eagle Response Team of
LASEMA and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.
The emergency operation was successfully concluded, while
the road was declared safe for motorists and other road users.
The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Damilola
Oke-Osanyintolu, commiserated with the family of the deceased dispatch rider
and prayed for the repose of his soul.
He also reiterated the commitment of the Lagos State
Government to protecting all road users, particularly vulnerable groups such as
dispatch riders and pedestrians.
The agency urged commercial drivers to avoid reckless
driving, wrongful overtaking and struggling for lanes, stressing the need for
motorists to obey traffic regulations.
“Road safety remains a collective responsibility and strict
adherence to traffic regulations is essential to preventing avoidable loss of
lives on Lagos roads,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
The agency also reaffirmed its commitment to prompt
emergency response and collaboration with other agencies.
