Tuesday, August 25, 2026 -The Cross River State Police Command has arrested two men, 70-year-old Asuquo Effiom and 68-year-old Moris Monday, a shoemaker, in Calabar for reportedly attempting to r@pe a 12-year-old girl in their neighbourhood.
Police arrested the suspects on Sunday, August 23, 2026
following a report lodged by the victim’s father.
The spokesperson for the command, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata,
who confirmed the incident in a statement, said that it happened in the Thomas
Henshaw area of Calabar.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim alleged
that Moris Monday, a shoe repairer, on two separate occasions, 13 and 14 August
2026, allegedly lured her into his room and attempted to s3xually assault her,”
the PPRO said.
"She further alleged that on 22 August 2026, Asuquo
Effiom similarly lured her into his room and attempted to s3xually assault
her.”
Akata disclosed they proceeded to the Hawkins Road area by
Thomas Henshaw Junction, where the suspects were found in the custody of
community members and were consequently taken into police custody.
But the suspects have denied the allegations, according to
Akata, stating that the victim had been referred to a government-approved
medical facility for medical examination.
“The case has been transferred to the State Criminal
Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet investigation and necessary legal
action.
“The Command assures the public that the matter will be
handled professionally and in accordance with the law," he added.
He assured that further developments will be made known as
the investigation progresses.
