Sunday, June 5, 2026 - Former Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp has agreed to become the new head coach of the Germany national football team after the departure of Julian Nagelsmann following the country's disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed on Friday
that it has begun talks with Klopp after parting ways with Nagelsmann, who
stepped down in the wake of Germany's shock Round of 32 elimination to
Paraguay. The federation said Klopp has already indicated he is willing in
principle to take over the role.
“Regarding the appointment of a new coach, the DFB
leadership will now seek talks with Jürgen Klopp. He has already signaled his
general willingness to take on the position,” DFB said.
Klopp stepped down as Liverpool manager in the summer
of 2024, after almost nine years in charge, to take a break from management
The German, who led Liverpool to Champions League and
Premier League honours, is currently under contract as Red Bull's head of
global football, but Sky Germany reports he has a verbal agreement which would
allow him to leave to take up the Germany job.
