Governor NAMADI orders immediate suspension of N1.3 billion hospital renovation contract

Monday, July 20, 2026 -Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has ordered the immediate suspension of the N1.3 billion contract for the renovation and remodelling of Gumel General Hospital.

The decision followed an unscheduled late-night inspection of the facility, during which the governor assessed the quality and pace of work at critical sections of the hospital, including the male and female wards, the General Out-Patient Department, and the isolation centre.

The governor expressed his dissatisfaction with the contractor’s performance and ordered the immediate suspension of the project.

Governor Namadi said the work carried out so far did not reflect the scope of the contract awarded by the state government, describing the progress as unsatisfactory.

According to him, the project was intended to deliver a comprehensive renovation and remodelling of the hospital, but the execution had failed to meet the government’s expectations.

“The progress of the work is unacceptable. We approved a complete renovation and remodelling of the hospital, but what we have seen does not meet the agreed standard. I have therefore directed that the project be suspended while we review the situation with the contractor,” the governor said.

He directed the Ministry of Health to suspend the contractor and take the necessary measures to protect public funds while ensuring the project is completed in line with the approved specifications.

The renovation contract, valued at more than N1.3 billion, was awarded to Yasmeen Automobile Nigeria Limited on December 17, 2025, with an eight-month completion timeline. However, seven months after work commenced, the governor said the level of execution remained far below expectations.

He reiterated that his administration would not condone poor-quality projects, warning contractors handling government contracts that strict adherence to specifications, quality standards and timely delivery remains non-negotiable.

Governor Namadi also visited Ringim General Hospital, where he inspected ongoing renovation work and instructed the contractor to address the identified shortcomings and accelerate the pace of execution.
