Monday, July 13, 2026 -President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka on his 92nd birthday, describing him as an exceptional figure whose contributions to literature, democracy and good governance have left a lasting impact on Nigeria and the world.
In a birthday message released on Sunday ahead of Soyinka’s
birthday on Monday, Tinubu said people like the renowned playwright and
activist are rare.
“Exceptional individuals like Professor Soyinka do not come
often in a generation. He is one of those who illuminate the path for humanity,
challenge convention and refuse to remain silent in the face of oppression and
injustice,” the President said.
Tinubu congratulated Soyinka on his 92nd birthday, praising
his achievements as a playwright, novelist, poet, essayist and advocate of good
governance.
He recalled that Soyinka became the first African to win the
Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986 and noted that he had also received several
prestigious international honours in recognition of his contributions to
literature and society.
The President also reflected on Soyinka’s role in Nigeria’s
struggle against military rule and his support for the June 12 democratic
movement.
“I also recall Professor Soyinka’s courageous struggle
against military dictatorship over the years and his efforts during the June 12
struggle, for which we were both in the trenches,” he said.
Tinubu described Soyinka as one of Nigeria’s greatest
national assets, saying his wisdom and commitment to the country’s progress
continue to inspire many.
“Today, I salute one of our nation’s living repositories of
history, knowledge and courage. That he is with us is a gift we will always
treasure. I thank him for his unwavering faith in the Nigerian project and his
wise counsel,” the President said.
He added that Soyinka’s influence has inspired generations
of writers, scholars and activists across the world.
“As he marks this birthday, I join the world in celebrating
his profound influence on generations of writers, scholars and activists, as
well as his sacrifices for our nation. I wish ‘Kongi’ many more years in
excellent health,” Tinubu said.
