Saturday, June 13, 2026 - Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested a suspected gun courier, identified as 30-year-old Muhammad Abubakar, in the Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The suspect was apprehended on Thursday, June 11, 2026 while
allegedly transporting a cache of weapons, including three AK-47 rifles, four
Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) tubes, and two magazines.
Preliminary investigations by the Service revealed that
Abubakar had departed Maigatari in neighboring Jigawa State and was en route to
Funtua in Katsina State, where he was expected to deliver the weapons.
The DSS disclosed that the arrest forms part of ongoing
efforts to dismantle arms trafficking networks operating across the region.
The agency added that investigations are continuing, with
security operatives working to identify and apprehend other individuals
connected to the illicit arms supply chain.
During interrogation, the suspect, who is married with two
children, reportedly confessed that he was promised a payment of N450,000 upon
successful delivery of the weapons.
The Service stated that Abubakar would be prosecuted in
accordance with the law upon the conclusion of investigations.
Security authorities noted that the operation highlights the
importance of sustained collaboration among security agencies in combating
criminal activities and enhancing public safety.
The arrest also reflects ongoing efforts by the Kano State
Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to support security operations and
implement measures aimed at ensuring the safety and security of residents
across the state.
