Saturday, June 27, 2026 - The parents of a seven-year-old Michigan, USA boy who died from heart failure weighing more than 18 stone (252 pounds) or 114kg have been arrested on charges of second-degree murder, child abuse, and torture.
The victim, Casper O'Brien of Flint Township, stood at 4 feet
2 inches tall and weighed roughly five times the average weight of a child his
age at the time of his death in November.
Damien and Jessica O’Brien face severe criminal charges
following an investigation into what authorities describe as catastrophic
parental neglect.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton detailed the stark
conditions surrounding the case, highlighting a complete lack of medical
oversight for the child despite the family possessing health insurance.
“On the face of it, this is cruel and extreme suffering from
this child caused by the neglect of the parents,” Leyton stated. “That is
obesity. This child did not have a pediatrician, was only taken to the doctor I
believe, according to the police report, once.”
In a contrast noted by investigators, records show the parents took the family dog to a veterinary clinic on the very morning of Casper's death.
The investigation revealed that the family lived in extreme
isolation. Casper and his five-year-old sister did not attend school, and Child
Protective Services had no record of the children's existence.
Efforts to check on the family's welfare had been blocked in
the past. The family's landlord attempted to gain entry to the property in
November due to maintenance and safety concerns, but the parents refused to let
him inside. When law enforcement officers finally entered the residence
following the emergency, they described the interior as a severe hoarding
environment
In a funeral tribute published online in November, family
members remembered Casper as a bright, loving boy with a joyful spirit who
loved watching children's shows, specifically the character Frankie Mash from
Super Monsters. Online memorials also noted that Casper was preceded in death
by a younger brother, Phoenix.
