FCT police impound vehicles with illegal tint, covered number plates

Sunday, June 7, 2026 - The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has commenced a comprehensive enforcement operation targeting vehicles operating in violation of regulations on tinted glass, concealed number plates, and improper vehicle registration.

The Commissioner of Police in charge of the FCT, Ahmed Sanusi, disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, June 5.

Sanusi said the operation became necessary following rising cases of criminal activities involving vehicles with tinted windows, covered number plates, and unregistered vehicles.

According to him, such vehicles are frequently used in “one-chance” robberies, kidnappings, and other violent crimes because they allow suspects to conceal their identities and evade detection.

“This poses a serious threat to public safety,” he said.

“Consequently, the Police Command in the FCT has commenced a comprehensive enforcement operation targeting vehicles operating in violation of these regulations.”

He added that the exercise is not intended to harass law-abiding citizens who have obtained legitimate approval to use tinted glass.

“It is to deny criminals the cover they exploit to perpetrate crimes against innocent citizens and FCT residents,” Sanusi stated.

The police commissioner disclosed that more than 30 vehicles had already been impounded since the commencement of the enforcement exercise for violations including illegal tinting, concealed number plates, and lack of proper registration.

He said owners and operators of such vehicles would be prosecuted in accordance with the laws of the Federation and the FCT Road Transport Regulations 2023.

Sanusi reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention aimed at safeguarding lives and property in the FCT.

He also urged residents to cooperate with security agencies, remain vigilant, and report suspicious persons, vehicles, or activities to the nearest police station or emergency contacts.

The commissioner further appealed for public understanding as enforcement operations continue across the territory.
