Wednesday, April 1, 2026 - US President Donald Trump has sharply criticised the United Kingdom over its refusal to support potential military action against Iran, telling Britain to “get your own oil” amid worsening fuel shortages linked to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
The remarks come after UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer
reaffirmed that Britain would not take part in any ground invasion of Iran. In
a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “All of those countries that can’t get jet
fuel because of the Strait of Hormuz, like the United Kingdom… I have a
suggestion for you.
“Number 1, buy from the U.S. we have plenty. Number 2, build
up some delayed courage, go to the Strait, and just TAKE IT. You’ll have to
start learning how to fight for yourself, the U.S.A. won’t be there to help you
anymore, just like you weren’t there for us.” He added: “Iran has been,
essentially, decimated. The hard part is done.”
The comments mark the latest escalation in tensions between
Washington and London over the conflict, with Trump also reportedly saying
Starmer is no “Winston Churchill” and criticising the UK’s stance throughout
the crisis.
Britain is currently facing mounting pressure over energy
supplies, with reports indicating its last major jet fuel shipment from the
Middle East is due within days. Disruptions to oil flows through the Strait of
Hormuz have driven up fuel prices and raised concerns about shortages.
Starmer is expected to chair an emergency COBRA meeting to
assess the economic impact, including contingency plans for diesel, jet fuel,
and fertiliser supplies, as well as the broader cost-of-living pressures.
Despite the war of words, diplomatic ties remain intact,
with plans for a UK state visit to the United States still expected to go
ahead.
Trump also criticised other allies, including France, over
restrictions on military logistics, while reports suggest the U.S. is weighing
options to end the conflict without reopening the Strait of Hormuz, focusing
instead on military pressure and diplomatic efforts.
