Tuesday, March, 3 2026 -Tragedy struck on Sunday in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State as two children drowned while playing in a floodwater collection site at Erediauwa Street off Sapele Road, Benin City, the state capital.
According to Punch, the four children had been playing
around the designated floodwater area when they slipped into the muddy water.
Two of them were pulled out lifeless, while the other two were rushed to a
nearby hospital and resuscitated.
“That area is meant to collect floodwater, and no one
expected the children to go there because it’s very muddy. Two were fished out
dead, while the other two were taken to the hospital and resuscitated,” the
witness said.
Confirming the incident, Edo State Police Command
spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, stated that rescue teams were promptly dispatched
after receiving the reports.
“Two of the children, unfortunately, died in the mud before
rescue arrived, while two others were rescued and taken to the hospital for
treatment,” she said.
The incident highlights the dangers posed by flood-prone
areas in the state, especially for unsupervised children.
