Friday, March 27, 2026 - Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed legislative support for the proposed creation of Anioma state, stating that the initiative remains a priority under the administration of Bola Tinubu.
Akpabio made the remarks while addressing members of the All
Progressives Congress at the party’s south-south zonal congress in Asaba.
“Anioma state will be created, with Asaba as its capital.
The senate fully supports the initiative spearheaded by Senator Ned Nwoko,” he
said. He added that Warri would serve as the capital of the remaining Delta
state, citing its infrastructure, including an airport, seaport, government
institutions and oil industry presence.
“This step will usher in a new era of development and shared
prosperity for all constituent communities,” Akpabio said. The proposal,
championed by Ned Nwoko, has gained traction in the 10th Senate, with lawmakers
considering it as part of broader constitutional amendments.
Akpabio described the agitation for Anioma state as
historically justified, noting that it reflects long-standing demands for
equity, administrative efficiency and balanced development. The senate
president also emphasised that creating the new state would promote
decentralisation and socio-economic growth by splitting Delta into two viable
entities.
He called for unity across the south-south region and urged
stakeholders to support the government’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” saying it would
drive national development and integration. Nwoko had earlier revealed that
dozens of senators have backed the proposal, describing the level of
legislative support as unprecedented.
