Thursday, March, 12 2026 - A Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, vehicle went up in flames in Lagos on Wednesday morning, leaving several passengers injured.
The incident occurred along Ikorodu Road inward Majidun
while the bus was in motion.
Passengers reportedly rushed out of the vehicle as soon as
the fire broke out, managing to escape before the flames spread further.
Some commuters, however, sustained injuries during the
scramble to exit the bus, with reports indicating that a number of them were
briefly trapped while attempting to evacuate.
Although the exact number of those injured has not been
confirmed, no fatalities were recorded in the incident.
Eyewitnesses said the BRT bus was travelling along the
designated BRT lane on Ikorodu Road when flames suddenly erupted from the
engine compartment.
One witness, who identified herself as Shade Jimoh,
described the moment as terrifying.
“It felt like something out of a horror movie. The bus was
moving when flames suddenly started coming out from the engine area. People
were shouting and trying to escape,” she said.
The exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined,
although some observers suspect a mechanical fault may have triggered the
incident.
A passenger who escaped without injuries said the situation
has renewed concerns over the safety of public transport in the state.
Officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service
confirmed the incident, stating that the bus caught fire at about 6:30 a.m.
According to Shakiru Amodu of the fire service, the agency
received a distress call at approximately 6:48 a.m., and emergency responders
arrived at the scene by 7:01 a.m.
He added that the fire occurred near the Majidun Boma
filling station but had been successfully brought under control by
firefighters.
