Wednesday, March, 4 2026 - At least one person has been confirmed dead and several others injured following an attack by suspected Lakurawa bandits on Manu village in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
Local sources said the assailants stormed the village at
about 9:02 p.m. on Sunday, opening fire indiscriminately.
A teenager, identified as Nafi’u Mamman, was reportedly
killed on the spot, while many residents sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Residents disclosed that the attackers, reportedly more than
20 in number, struck during Taraweeh prayers, when most villagers were gathered
at the mosque.
“The strategy was aimed at evading local vigilantes and
reducing resistance,” sources said.
An official of Tangaza Local Government Area confirmed the
incident and called for the urgent deployment of additional security personnel
to safeguard lives and property.
Tangaza and several other border communities in Sokoto State
have witnessed recurring attacks linked to the Lakurawa group and other armed
groups operating along the Niger border.
The porous boundary has facilitated the movement of criminal
elements across communities, complicating security operations.
Over the past few years, residents in Tangaza, Gudu, Illela,
and parts of Sabon Birni have faced repeated incidents of cattle rustling,
kidnappings for ransom, and deadly raids. Despite intensified military
operations and the presence of security task forces, attacks have persisted,
forcing many communities to live in fear.
All efforts to reach the state police command were
unsuccessful, as the spokesman, DSP Ahmed Rufai, could not be contacted at the
time of filing this report.
