Ondo government bans Okada operations in 18 LG’s

Thursday, March, 12 2026 - The Ondo State Government has announced restrictions on the operations of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okada, across the 18 local government areas of the state.

The restriction, which takes immediate effect from Wednesday, March 11, 2026, prohibits the use of motorcycles between 7pm and 6am.

The Commander of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed this on Wednesday at the agency’s headquarters in Akure, the state capital.

Adeleye said the directive was issued by the state governor in line with existing laws and public safety regulations aimed at strengthening security and maintaining public order.

“I want to put it on record that by the directive of the governor of Ondo State, and pursuant to the relevant laws and public safety regulations of the state, the Ondo State Security Network Agency hereby notifies the general public of the following security measures and regulatory directives currently in force within the state,” he said.

He explained that the restriction would affect all motorcycle operators except security personnel and individuals providing essential services who are specifically exempted by the government.

Adeleye also directed all motorcycle operators in the state to register and obtain certification from the Amotekun Corps either at its headquarters or at the various local government commands.

“All motorcycle users and operators within the state shall register and obtain the requisite certification from the Ondo State Security Network Agency. Any person who fails to comply with this registration requirement shall be deemed to be operating unlawfully within the state,” he said.

As part of additional security measures, the government also banned cart pushing in major towns across the state.

According to the Amotekun commander, the measure is aimed at improving public safety, traffic management and environmental order within urban centres.

“The activities of cart pushers within major metropolises across Ondo State are hereby prohibited. This measure is intended to promote public safety, ensure better traffic management and maintain environmental order within urban centres,” he stated.

He further directed all dealers in condemned iron scrap metals to register with the Ondo State Government within two weeks from the date of the announcement.

Failure to comply within the stipulated period, he warned, may attract enforcement actions in accordance with the law.

The government also prohibited the display or sale of farm produce outside approved markets across the state.

Meanwhile, the Amotekun Corps announced the arrest of 70 suspects in connection with various criminal activities across the state.

While parading the suspects on Wednesday, Adeleye said they were arrested for offences including kidnapping, stealing, vandalism, burglary and human trafficking.

“Today, I am parading 70 suspects. Out of this number, 39 were arrested for breaches of law and order, 18 for kidnapping-related offences, one for violation of the anti-grazing law, one for human trafficking, while 11 were arrested in connection with court-related matters,” he said.
