Wednesday, March, 4 2026 - A Kano State High Court has sentenced two men, Aliyu Hussaini and Amir Zakariyya, to d3ath by hanging for the k!lling of a newly wedded groom, Yazid Haruna.
The convicts, residents of Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters and
Unguwar Malam Quarters in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State, were
found guilty of conspiracy, armed robbery, and culpable homicide.
The prosecution counsel, Mr Lamido Abba-Sorondinki,
told the court that the offence was committed on 11 June 2025 at Sheka Sabuwar
Abuja Quarters in Kano.
He said that at about 2:47 a.m., the defendants
conspired and armed themselves with long knives and a machete before attacking
the victim.
According to the prosecution, the defendants robbed Haruna
of two mobile phones and the sum of N19,500 before fatally st@bbing him during
the attack.
He added that the victim sustained multiple injuries,
which led to his d3ath.
Abba-Sorondinki said the prosecution presented three
witnesses and tendered medical reports to establish its case against the
defendants.
However, the accused persons denied committing the
offences.
The prosecution maintained that the offences contravened
Sections 97(1), 298(c) and 221(a) of the Penal Code Laws of Kano State.
Counsel to the defence, Mr Haruna Saleh-Zakariyya, presented
the defendants to testify in their own defence and appealed to the court for
leniency.
Delivering the judgment on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, Justice
Amina Adamu-Aliyu held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond
reasonable doubt.
She described the actions of the defendants as inhuman and
expressed concern over the rising cases of phone-related robberies in the
state.
The court sentenced each of the convicts to one year’s
imprisonment for conspiracy and life imprisonment for armed robbery.
They were further sentenced to death by hanging for culpable
homicide.
Meanwhile, the court recalled that on 20 October 2025, the
same convicts were also sentenced to d@ath by hanging by a Kano State High
Court for k!lling a lecturer after robbing him of his mobile phone.
