Tuesday, March 31, 2026 - The National Human Rights Commission in Ebonyi State has called for justice for the family of Ms Nnenna Onu, a 35-year-old woman allegedly murdered over the inheritance of her father’s property.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Onu was k!lled and
her body burnt beyond recognition in December 2021 at Amagu, Anike, in Onicha
Local Government Area of the state.
Onu was a graduate of Public Administration from Akanu Ibiam
Federal Polytechnic, Afikpo.
Her family, comprising all female children and an elderly
mother, had reportedly been forced out of their father’s compound five years
ago by relatives because their father had no male child.
Recall that the Nigeria Police Force arrested one Chidiebere
Okoro, the suspected k!ller.
Okoro was remanded at the maximum correctional centre in
Abakaliki, Ebonyi state capital.
Speaking to NAN on Monday, March 30, 2026, the Coordinator
of NHRC in Ebonyi, Mr Christopher Okorie, decried the delays in the case and
urged the state government and concerned Nigerians to intervene.
"Onu’s crime was that she insisted on inheriting her
father’s property as a woman. This is barbaric. NHRC Ebonyi State office has
followed up the case since 2021 and resurrected it this year, 2026.
“We are glad to announce that one of the suspects has been
apprehended, arraigned in court, and remanded in prison custody.
“NHRC continues to seek the collaboration of all civil
society organisations, the police, the media, and other stakeholders to ensure
that justice is done,” Okorie said.
Reacting, the younger sister of the deceased, Mrs
Juliet Onu, appealed to Governor Francis Nwifuru for intervention.
“My brother, it has not been easy since 2021. My mother has
not returned to her husband’s home and has been living with me and my husband.
“In fact, I didn’t know that being a woman is a crime in
this part of the world. I pray God will give us justice in the end,” she said.
