Thursday, March 26, 2026 - The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has confirmed the death of a dispatch rider after he was struck by a fully loaded HOWO diesel tanker (RBC 38 XF) under the Cele Bridge corridor of the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway.
In a statement on Wednesday signed by Director of Public
Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA said security reports showed
the tanker “violently rammed into the dispatch motorcycle, causing the rider to
be trapped underneath the tanker,” and he “died instantly.”
LASTMA personnel stationed along the route immediately
cordoned off the crash site with cones and cautionary red tape to prevent
secondary collisions and safeguard other commuters.
The statement added that the tanker was impounded by LASTMA
officials, while the driver “absconded upon perceiving the gravity of the
incident.”
Operatives of the Ijesha Police Division arrived to
reinforce security and assumed investigative responsibility.
LASTMA handed over the deceased rider, the impounded tanker,
and the damaged motorcycle to the police for “thorough investigation and
diligent prosecution.”
The remains of the rider were retrieved from beneath the
tanker and conveyed to a morgue in Yaba.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki,
expressed condolences to the family, describing the incident as “deeply
distressing,” and urged the police to “pursue a comprehensive inquiry into the
root cause of the crash and ensure that justice is served in accordance with
the law.”
