Death toll from Plateau massacre hits 30

Tuesday, March 31, 2026 - Death toll in Sunday night’s devastating attack on Gari Yawaye community in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, has risen above 30, according to residents of the community.

According to a youth leader in the community, Philip Markus who revealed that deaths were recorded as some victims who suffered various degrees of injuries during the attack could not make it.

Markus said after the attack, about 12 corpses were recovered in different parts of the community, while the injured were taken to hospitals, including the Jos University Teaching Hospital, Bingham University Teaching Hospital, Plateau State Specialist Hospital, and other private hospitals.

He, however, lamented that some of the victims gave up the ghost while receiving treatment, while five fresh corpses were discovered during a thorough search in parts of the community.

“It is sad to say that the death toll is now more than 30 and we fear that it could increase as the days go by,” Markus said.

“After the attack on Sunday night, we discovered about 12 bodies who died on the spot.

“Several other people were seriously injured and we took them to JUTH, Bingham, Plateau Specialist Hospital and other private hospitals. The number of injured people were more than 100.

“But sadly, we have lost more than 15 people so far. Some of them died while receiving treatment due to the severity of their injuries.

“On Monday, we also recovered five more bodies in various locations in Angwan.

“So as at now, I can tell you that we have lost more than 30 people,” he said.
