Wednesday, March, 11 2026 - No fewer than 86 street beggars were arrested during a clampdown operation in the Agege and Ketu areas of Lagos State.
This is just as the government also arrested 12 suspected
miscreants during multiple monitoring and enforcement operations.
The Commissioner for the Ministry of the Environment and
Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a post on his X page on
Tuesday.
Wahab stated that out of the 86 beggars, 25 were first
arrested in Agege, while others were arrested in Ketu.
He wrote, “During our ongoing monitoring and enforcement
patrol today, 25 beggars were arrested in Agege as part of efforts to address
street begging and restore order in public spaces.
“The patrol team has since moved to Ketu, and as of 1200hrs,
a total of 86 beggars, nine children and 12 miscreants have been apprehended
across the areas covered.”
He added that those arrested would be profiled and
transferred to relevant government agencies for further action.
“Those arrested will be profiled and handed over to the
appropriate government agencies for further action in line with existing laws
and social intervention protocols.
“We will continue these operations to discourage street
begging, protect vulnerable persons and maintain order across Lagos,” he said.
The arrest followed the ministry’s continued clampdown and
statewide campaign against street begging and related nuisances that have
intensified since early 2026.
On Monday, the Lagos State Government also apprehended an
individual for allegedly dumping refuse on a public road in the state.
