Group rejects move to convert Yikpata NYSC to IDP camp

Friday, February 27, 2026 - Emirates Youth Transparency Association, LEYTA, in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, has raised serious concerns over the reported plan by the state government to convert the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Yikpata into a refugee camp for displaced Fulani communities from the Kwara South Senatorial District of the state.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the group warned that such a decision could worsen the fragile security situation in Edu Local Government Area, where residents have been grappling with frequent attacks, killings, and kidnappings.

LEYTA noted that many communities in the senatorial district are still traumatised by recent violent incidents, including the abduction of 176 residents from the Woro community and the killing and abduction of several people during attacks in the Gbugbu and Bachitagi communities.

According to the association, relocating displaced populations to Kwara North, particularly to an area already experiencing insecurity, would place additional pressure on the region’s overstretched security system.

The group questioned why the state government could not consider alternative locations within Kwara South or neutral facilities such as the Kwara State Stadium Complex in Ilorin for temporary accommodation.

LEYTA stressed that Edu LGA has already endured repeated attacks and displacement, warning that any policy that ignores the region’s security realities could heighten tensions and worsen instability.

Its three major demands to the state government include the immediate review of the Yikpata decision, urging authorities to relocate the proposed camp to a safer and more suitable location; the urgent rescue of the 176 abducted victims from the Woro community; and the implementation of a comprehensive security strategy for Edu LGA and the wider state, including increased deployment of security forces, intelligence-driven operations, and stronger community engagement.

LEYTA emphasised that the issue goes beyond politics and centres on the safety and survival of residents.

The group further urged the state government to act swiftly and responsibly to prevent further escalation of insecurity, warning that Edu LGA cannot carry another burden under the current security situation.
