Sunday, February 1, 2026 - The Anambra State Internal Revenue Service has arrested five persons for engaging in illegal revenue collection in Nnewi.
The suspects identified as Edwin Okonkwo, Sunny Obasi,
Christian Oziri, Christian Chinedu, and Nnamdi Nworie, were apprehended while
collecting money ranging from N300 ro N500 from tricycle riders at different
locations in Nnewi.
Parading the suspects in Awka on Saturday, the AIRS Special
Commander, Nathan Obikwelu, said the suspects contravened Anambra State
Government’s law banning illegal revenue collection from tricycle riders and
commercial bus operators.
Obikwelu added that the arrest was in line with the state
governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo’s directive against illegal revenue collectors.
He said, “The suspects – Edwin Okonkwo, Sunny Obasi,
Christian Oziri, Christian Chinedu, and Nnamdi Nworie – were apprehended while
collecting money ranging from three hundred to five hundred naira from tricycle
riders at different locations in Nnewi.
“The state government condemned the act in its entirety and
assured that the suspects would be charged in court, where they would be
remanded in prison.
“The arrests were in line with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s
directive that illegal cash collections must stop in Anambra State.
“The suspects also contravened Anambra State Government law banning illegal revenue collection from tricycle riders and commercial bus operators.”
