Saturday, January 3, 2026 - The police has released Mr Ishaku Haggai, who was earlier arrested over allegations of brutalizing his 15-year-old daughter, Rachael in Jalingo, Taraba State.
Haggai was accused of brutalizing Rachael on New Year Eve,
leaving her with serious injuries, including a broken hand.
During questioning at the police station, Mr Haggai claims
that Rachael associates with boys against his instructions, adding that he had
been warning her that she is too young to have a boyfriend.
Speaking to a Taraba journalist, Jerison Amos on Thursday,
Mr. Haggai, revealed that Racheal went for the crossover night with her mother
and her siblings but was nowhere to be found after the vigil.
Racheal returned home about 4am the next morning, 1st
January 2026. Mr Haggai said he flogged Rachael with a cane after he discovered
that she had sneaked out during the vigil to visit her boyfriend.
He also debunked rumours making the rounds on social media
that he disowned his daughter.
The father further revealed that Rachael ran away from the
house twice and stayed with her boyfriend for two weeks until he searched after
her and brought her back home.
“This
morning I paid a special visit to the family of Mr. Haggai who has been accused
of mercilessly beat!ng of his daughter Racheal which the case went viral on
social media yesterday 1st January 2026,” the journalist wrote.
My visit was
to get firsthand information on what happened and why would a father do that to
his own biological daughter.
According to
Mr. Haggai, on the eve of the new year on 31/12/2025 he wasn't feeling fine he
didn't go for the crossover night. So Racheal went for the crossover night with
her mother and her siblings, Lo, and behold Racheal was nowhere to be found
after the vigil and she returned home about 4am the next morning of 1st January
2026.
He said this
wasn't the first time Racheal was doing that even though he has been warning
her of such behaviour which has led her running from house about two times and
staying with her boyfriend for two weeks until he searched after her and
brought her back home and as a father he kept counselling her and some people
also did that to her.
So, after
asking her where she went on the crossover night he realised she was with her
boyfriend that was why he flogged her with a cane yesterday morning.
He later
asked her yesterday morning to follow them to church but she complained that
she wasn't feeling fine as a result of the beating. As they left for church her
neighbour called the daughter and videoed her with some clips and took to
social media
By returning
home from church yesterday, he was called upon by the DPO of GRA Division that
he was needed in the station regarding the case of his daughter Racheal he told
them he was just coming from the church and he can't come immediately, in just
few minutes the Police officers stormed his house and arrested him.
After
reaching the station, he narrated to the DPO what happened and he was later
granted bail with the intervention of a lawyer and the DPO said his case was
brought by a Honourable and he ordered they should lock him up.
He was later
released yesterday and the DPO took some time to counsel Racheal and that's how
they all returned home the same yesterday.
Note that
Racheal is the fourth daughter of Mr. Haggai has three elder sisters and two
younger ones.
As the time
of my visit Racheal was with her family and the father denied the rumours that
he disowned his daughter Racheal.
