Monday, January 26, 2026 - A yet-to-be-identified driver suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol has been hospitalised following a collision with a truck in the Ebute-Ero area of Apongbon, Lagos State.
According to a statement by the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, that the incident happened in the early hours of the day.
Taofiq stated that investigations revealed that the driver
was speeding when he crashed into a moving truck.
The impact of the collision was said to have left him
trapped in the wreckage of the vehicle and with injuries.
He stated, “Preliminary security findings indicate that a
male motorist, believed to be heavily intoxicated, was operating a Honda Jeep
(FKJ 562 JF) at a dangerously excessive and uncontrollable speed when he
forcefully crashed into the rear of a moving Scania truck while descending the
bridge.
“The violent impact of the collision left the driver
critically trapped within the mangled wreckage of his vehicle, creating an
immediate life-threatening emergency.
“In a swift demonstration of professionalism, vigilance and
operational efficiency, LASTMA rescue personnel promptly mobilised to the
accident scene, carried out a delicate emergency extraction of the trapped
driver and handed him over to security operatives.
The injured driver was immediately transported to a nearby
medical facility for urgent and comprehensive medical attention.”
He added that the accident scene was cordoned off to prevent
a secondary accident, with support from police operatives in the area.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the state
governor on transportation, Sola Giwa, described the crash as avoidable while
wishing the injured driver a speedy recovery.
“He, however, strongly condemned the reckless conduct that
precipitated the incident, reiterating that the Lagos State Government has
consistently cautioned motorists against driving under the influence of
alcohol.
“Hon. Giwa emphasised that drinking and driving remains one
of the most lethal forms of road indiscipline, stressing that such
irresponsible behaviour not only imperils the life of the driver but also
exposes innocent road users to needless danger and potential loss of life.
“He reaffirmed the unwavering resolve of the Lagos State
Government to intensify enforcement of traffic laws and to continue
prioritising the protection of lives and property across all parts of the
state,” Taofiq concluded.
