Thursday, January 29, 2026 - A yet-to-be-identified male roadside trader was injured on Wednesday after a railing attached to a bridge under construction collapsed on him in the Ojuore area of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State.
According to a statement issued by the spokesperson of the
Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, that
the incident occurred at about 4pm.
Akinbiyi said the trader was trapped beneath the fallen
railing before being rescued by sympathisers, TRACE officials, and site
engineers.
He said, “A serious accident occurred today at the Ojuore
road construction site when a section of the railing of the bridge under
construction unexpectedly gave way.
“The incident involved a roadside trader of Hausa descent,
who was crushed and trapped under the debris.
“Eyewitnesses said the victim sustained life-threatening
injuries, prompting site engineers, alongside officials of TRACE and the
police, to act swiftly to rescue him from the scene.”
According to him, the injured trader was later handed over
to his family, who took him to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.
“The victim’s family has since taken custody of him and
transported him to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention,” Akinbiyi
added.
He noted that efforts were ongoing to remove the fallen
railing, while TRACE officials and the police remained at the scene to manage
traffic and ensure safety.
The incident has once again raised concerns about safety
standards at construction sites.
In July 2025, the Lagos State Safety Commission sealed a
construction site operated by Monterosa Construction Company in the Lekki area
after a crane accident claimed the life of a worker, Rotimi Adesina.
Adesina, believed to be the crane operator, was reportedly
rushed to Evercare Hospital, Lekki Phase One, where he was confirmed dead
shortly after arrival
