Saturday, January 24, 2026 - Public affairs commentator, Mahdi Shehu has accused Nigerian lawmakers of being too docile and fundamentally compromised following revelations that the gazetted version of the Tax Law 2025 was altered from what was passed by the National Assembly.
Shehu made the allegation in a post on X on Friday while
reacting to the interim report of an ad-hoc committee set up by the House of
Representatives to investigate the controversy surrounding the law.
The committee, chaired by Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, confirmed
that the gazetted Tax Law 2025 contained additions and removals that were not
part of what lawmakers debated and approved.
Reacting to the findings, Shehu said the development showed
that lawmakers had lost control over the laws they pass.
“It is clear that the current Nigerian lawmakers are too
docile and fundamentally compromised to a point that their deliberations and
conclusions can be trampled upon by hardened criminals without fear of
consequences,” he said.
According to him, the changes identified by the committee
could not be explained as clerical or typographical errors.
He argued that the alterations were “a deliberate human
intervention and insertion intended to deceive the public and confer undue
advantage.”
“It is clear from the above initial findings that it was
neither a clerical or typographical error nor a human mistake but a deliberate
human intervention and insertion intended to deceive the public and confer
undue advantage to certain desperate criminals whose pathology is too full of
FRAUD & FORGERY.”
Shehu further expressed doubt that those responsible would
be held accountable, saying the National Assembly was unlikely to take steps to
bring the forgers to justice.
“It is also clear that beyond these knee-jerk findings, the
National Assembly will not take measures to bring the forgers to justice,” he
said.
He added that the situation had sent a dangerous signal to
Nigerians.
“Nigerians are now aware that laws of the land do not matter
anymore and that criminals are safe and protected,” Shehu said.
