Thursday, January 8, 2026 - The Nigerian Army’s 2 Brigade, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has warned members of the public to desist from speculation that could prejudice the investigation into the death of a minor, Timothy Daniel, which occurred on January 1, 2026.
Daniel, 13, was allegedly shot dead by a soldier attached to
Sterling Petrochemical and Fertiliser Limited in Ette, Ikot Abasi Local
Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, for reportedly attempting to stop the
soldier from making sexual advances towards his 15-year-old sister, Miracle
Daniel.
The Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters
2 Brigade, Capt. Lawal Muhammad, stated in a statement in Uyo on Thursday that
no conclusions had yet been reached, as investigations into the incident were
still ongoing.
While assuring that the outcome of the investigation would
be made public, Muhammad urged the general public to refrain from speculation
or comments capable of undermining the investigative process.
The statement issued by the brigade partly read,
“Headquarters 2 Brigade Nigerian Army wishes to inform the general public of an
unfortunate incident involving a minor, Timothy Daniel (13 years old), which
occurred on January 1, 2026, in Ette, Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa
Ibom State.
“In line with standard procedures, the Nigerian Army
immediately instituted an investigation to establish the facts and
circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The investigation is currently ongoing, and no findings or
conclusions have been reached at this stage.
“Accordingly, the Nigerian Army urges the general public to
refrain from speculation or commentary that may prejudice the investigative
process.
“The outcome of the investigation will be made public upon
its conclusion, in accordance with extant laws and regulations.”
Muhammad expressed the sympathy and condolences of the
Nigerian Army to the family of the deceased and appreciated the understanding
and cooperation of the public.
He further reiterated the Army’s unwavering commitment to
professionalism, strict adherence to the rules of engagement, and
accountability in the conduct of its personnel.
“The Nigerian Army expresses its sincere sympathy and
condolences to the family and loved ones of Timothy Daniel and commiserates
with them over their loss. We pray for the repose of his soul,” the statement
added.
