Thursday, January 8, 2026 - A 19-year-old boy identified as Kabiru, has been arrested for alleged s3xual harassment while wearing masquerade costume in Okehi Local Local Government Area of Kogi State.
According to a statement issued by the President, Ummah
Affairs in the community, Kabiru allegedly hugged a Muslim girl in niqab and
attempted to s3xually abuse her.
The incident occurred on January 3, 2026 at Oboroke
community when the girl was returning home after fetching water from a public
tap.
The suspect has since been handed over to a vigilante group
pending appropriate disciplinary and legal actions in line with community and
lawful procedures.
The statement described the act as unprovoked, unlawful, and
a serious s3xual offence, as well as a violation of the victim’s dignity,
safety, and fundamental human rights.
“We wish to formally inform the public that the distress
report circulated yesterday concerning the sexual harassment of our sister on
niqab has been duly followed up,” the statement read.
"On 3rd January, 2026, at Oboroke, Ihima, Okehi Local
Government Area of Kogi State, our sister was unlawfully accosted from behind
by a masquerade while returning home from a tap with water on her head.
"The masquerade hugged her and further attempted to
s3xually abuse her—an act that is heinous, shameful, and totally unacceptable
under any custom, culture, or religion.
"Following swift community intervention and
cooperation, the individual responsible has been identified and apprehended.
His name is Kabiru, a 19-year-old boy from Oboroke, Ihima.
"He has since been handed over to the Vigilante group,
where he is currently being held, pending appropriate disciplinary and legal
actions in line with community and lawful procedures. Attached to this post are
his pictures.
"We commend the vigilance, courage, and prompt response
of community members who ensured that justice was not obstructed.
"We also call on all parents, guardians, and community
leaders to intensify efforts in moral upbringing and to caution youths against
engaging in acts that bring disgrace, trauma to victims, and severe
consequences to themselves.
“Most importantly, we stand in solidarity with the victim,
pray for her healing and emotional recovery, and reaffirm our commitment to
protecting the dignity, safety, and rights of all members of our
community—especially Muslim women.”
