Denmark warns US invasion on Greenland would mean War

Wednesday, January 21, 2026 - Danish MP and chairman of Denmark’s parliamentary defense committee Rasmus Jarlov has warned that if U.S. President Donald Trump orders a military invasion of Greenland, it would trigger a direct military conflict between the United States and Denmark.

Jarlov told CNN that Denmark would defend Greenland, and an invasion would mean war. “If they invade, then it means war,” he said.

According to Jarlov, Denmark will defend Greenland and, if American troops invade, the two countries would be fighting each other. He acknowledged that the United States is militarily stronger, but said Denmark’s duty is to protect its land and people. “We will defend Greenland,” Jarlov added.

Jarlov also said such a scenario would be catastrophic not only for Copenhagen but also for Washington. He argued that the economic rationale for seizing Greenland is weak, noting that the United States already has access to the island. “The economic justification is very weak,” he said, adding that annexation would only bring additional costs.

The warning comes amid escalating tensions over Trump’s repeated statements that the U.S. should gain control of Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark with strategic and resource significance

Trump has declined to say directly whether he would use force, but has threatened tariffs on European countries if a deal over Greenland cannot be reached.
