Court sentences man to 5 years in prison over for burglary, stealing items worth N20m in Ogun




Thursday, January 22, 2026 - Chief Magistrate Mrs. A. K. Araba of the Abeokuta Chief Magistrates’ Court, sitting in Isabo, on Wednesday sentenced one Jimoh Elegbede to five years’ imprisonment for burglary and stealing household items worth N20 million.

Elegbede, aged 34, was convicted on a three-count charge of conspiracy, burglary, and stealing.

Magistrate Mrs. Araba held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and found the defendant guilty as charged.

In her judgment, Araba sentenced the defendant to one year’s imprisonment on count one, five years’ imprisonment on count two, and five years’ imprisonment on count three, without the option of a fine.

She ordered that the sentences should run concurrently.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Lawrence Olu-Balogun, told the court that the defendant committed the offences between September and October 2025, at about 11:00 p.m., at No. 3, Toyin Agbemiga Crescent, Bode Olude Area in Abeokuta.

Olu-Balogun said the defendant conspired with others, who are now at large, to commit burglary and stealing.

He told the court that Jimoh unlawfully broke into the dwelling house of Alhaja Mojisola Daramola while she was not at home, with intent to commit a felony.

The prosecutor said the defendant stole several household items, including a 42-inch smart television, refrigerator, generator, inverter system, gas cylinders, solar table fan, cooking utensils, jewellery, native attires, kitchenware, and other valuables.

According to him, the stolen items were valued at N20 million, and the defendant was arrested while trying to sell some of them.

The prosecutor noted that the offence committed contravened Sections 516, 411, and 390 of the Criminal Code, Vol. I, Laws of Ogun 2006.
