Monday, January 12, 2026 - Over ten people were reportedly killed following a fresh clash between farmers and herders in Donga Local Government Area of Taraba State.
Among those killed were a councilor representing Akete Ward
in Donga Local Government Council, Hon. Shagari Bankaki.
A source in Donga town, Lawal Adamu, told Daily Trust that
the crisis broke out on Saturday, January 10, 2025 at Gundom village.
He said trouble started when a herder allegedly led his
cattle into a farm in the village, destroying crops.
According to him, villagers reportedly apprehended the
herder and k!lled him, an action that sparked violent reprisals between farmers
and herders in the area.
Lawal said the ensuing violence led to the d3ath of more
than ten people, including the councillor.
He added that the exact number of casualties on both sides
could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report.
The spokesperson of the State Police Command, ASP Victor
Mshelizah, confirmed the incident
He, however, said that only three dead bodies and a wounded
woman had so far been recovered by the police at the scene.
Mshelizah said the Divisional Police Officer in charge of
Donga Division is leading a team of operatives in a search of nearby forests to
determine if there are more casualties.
