Wednesday, December 17, 2025 - Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who represents Abia South Senatorial District, has set out tough conditions under which he would consider defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmaker said any decision to join the APC would hinge
on significant changes in the conduct of President Bola Tinubu’s
administration, especially policies he believes are inflicting hardship on
Nigerians.
Speaking in an interview on Monday, Abaribe said his
foremost condition would be the reversal of policies that, in his words,
“punish Nigerians.”
He further stated that the size of government must be
reduced, while aides and officials around the President should be properly
checked and restrained.
Abaribe emphasized that Nigeria operates a democratic system
and not a monarchy, insisting that governance must align with democratic
principles.
Responding to a question on whether he would defect to the
APC if President Tinubu personally invited him, the senator said he would first
present his conditions.
“You must review all your policies, especially those that
punish Nigerians, and reverse them. That is number one.
“Number two, you cut down your government. Number three, you
rein in all the people around you. There are many other things we would also
tell him,” he said.
He added that it would be up to the President to decide
whether to meet those conditions, stressing that governance should not be
conducted in an authoritarian manner.
“This is not a monarchy; it is a democracy,” Abaribe said,
adding that he would likely be the last person to defect to the APC.
“If I ever defect, it would mean there are practically no
other political parties left in Nigeria,” he concluded.
