Tuesday, December 23, 2025 - The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has renewed its call for the impeachment of President Bola Tinubu if he is found guilty of tampering with Nigeria’s tax laws.
The party accused the Tinubu administration of serious
executive misconduct and disrespect for the constitution, following allegations
that tax laws passed by the National Assembly were altered before being
gazetted.
This comes as the House of Representatives set up a
seven-member ad-hoc committee to probe differences between the tax laws
approved by lawmakers and the versions officially published.
Raising the issue under Order 6, Rule 2 of the House Rules
on a Point of Privilege, Hon. Abdulsammad Dasuki (PDP, Sokoto) said his
legislative rights were violated because the gazetted tax laws were different
from what lawmakers debated and passed.
Reacting, the PRP said any proof linking President Tinubu to
the alleged changes should lead to his immediate impeachment, stressing that no
one is above the law.
In a statement signed by its national chairman, Falalu
Bello, the party claimed the executive secretly altered bills after they were
passed by the National Assembly, without legislative approval. Bello warned
that such actions pose a serious threat to democracy and due process.
“This audacious act of executive dishonesty, characterized
by the insertion, deletion, and modification of substantive provisions
post-passage legislation, underscores a reckless disdain for the rule of law,
separation of powers, and the constitutional order. It is an unforgivable
breach of trust, a mockery of the Nigerian people, and an open assault on the
integrity of our legislative process.”
He added that the alleged actions were illegal and an attack
on the independence of the legislature.
“The PRP condemns this act as not only illegal but as a
direct attack on the independence of the legislature and the constitutional
rights of Nigerians to transparent and accountable governance.”
The party called for a full and open investigation to
identify and punish all those involved.
“If evidence emerges implicating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
in these illegal manipulations, the PRP calls for his impeachment without
delay. No individual, including the President, should be above the law,” the
statement said.
PRP also demanded the immediate suspension of the disputed
tax laws until all inconsistencies are resolved. It warned that it would go to
court if the matter is not addressed quickly.
“Should this matter not be addressed promptly, the PRP will
have no choice but to seek judicial intervention.”
Bello stressed that respecting the rule of law is crucial to
protecting Nigeria’s democracy and economic stability, urging citizens, civil
society groups, and lawmakers to resist what the party described as an assault
on constitutional order.
“We stand with the Nigerian people and call on all relevant
authorities to ensure that justice prevails, that constitutional order is
restored, and that this dangerous precedent is decisively overturned,” the PRP
added.
