Benue monarch calls for return of IDPs to their ancestral land

Friday, December 19, 2025 - A Benue monarch, the Tor Sankera, HRH Chief David Sevav, who had given refuge to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), has called for their return to their ancestral homes in Taraba State.

He stated this during a prayer session organized by displaced Tiv people from Taraba, who have been taking refuge in the Kyado axis of Benue since 2019.

Chief Sevav said the prolonged occupation of farmland by the displaced population from Taraba was affecting the indigenous people in the area, raising concerns about an impending food crisis. He called on Governor Agbu Kefas to fast-track the return of the people.

He was represented by the Tyoor Mbazun in Ukum Local Government Area, Zaki John Kyungwa, who urged both the Aku-Uka of Wukari, Mannu Ada Ali, and the Tor Tiv, Professor James Ayatse, to intervene for the return of the displaced people to their ancestral homes in Taraba State.

It was revealed during the prayer session that over 3,000 Tiv people had been killed since April 2019, 300,000 displaced, and over 1,000 villages destroyed in the southern part of Taraba State.

They called on Governor Kefas to facilitate the safe return of the displaced Tiv taking refuge in Benue State to their ancestral homes in Taraba.
