Any viable coalition must be based on accountability and clear plan to address Nigeria’s challenges - ADEBAYO

Monday, December 29, 2025 -The Social Democratic Party, SDP, has explained why it pulled out of coalition talks aimed at challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Prince Adewole Adebayo, the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, said the discussions collapsed due to what he described as credibility, ideological and integrity concerns surrounding some opposition figures.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Adebayo said the SDP was not opposed to coalition politics but would not align with individuals whose records contradict the party’s values.

According to him, opposition to President Tinubu alone is not enough reason to form a political alliance.

Adebayo said several politicians seeking to join the coalition were rejected after internal screening, adding that some were not even granted interviews.

He accused certain opposition figures of attempting to exploit public dissatisfaction with the current administration without offering credible alternatives.

The SDP leader warned that replacing the current government with individuals he described as “worse” would not benefit Nigerians, stressing that the party would not support any coalition driven by opportunism or personal ambition.

Adebayo also criticised politicians facing corruption allegations who are positioning themselves as alternatives to the ruling party, insisting that individuals with questionable records lack the moral authority to lead.

He maintained that any viable coalition must be based on shared ideology, accountability and a clear plan to address Nigeria’s challenges.

According to him, politicians seeking alliance must first acknowledge their role in the country’s current problems before presenting themselves as agents of change.

Adebayo added that the SDP would rather remain out of power than participate in a coalition that compromises its principles or betrays public trust.
