Monday, November 24, 2025 - President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday said he is closely monitoring the security situation across the country.
The president said this while reacting to the release of the
38 worshippers abducted in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State.
Tinubu said he would not relent until he secures the
release of all the other hostages, even as he announced that 51 out of the
missing students of the Catholic school in Niger State, have been recovered.
The president said he is still on top of the security
situation, noting that the urgency of the breaches in security informed
cancellation of his trip to South Africa for the Cop30 summit.
According to him, “My fellow Nigerians, you will recall
that I cancelled my trip to the G20 summit in South Africa to enable me
coordinate the security efforts at home
“Thanks to the efforts of our security forces over the last
few days, all the 38 worshippers abducted in Eruku, Kwara State have been
rescued.
“I am equally happy that 51 out of the missing students of
the Catholic school in Niger State, have been recovered.
“I am closely monitoring the security situation nationwide
and receiving continuous updates from the front-line.
“Let me be clear: I will not relent. Every Nigerian, in
every state, has the right to safety — and under my watch, we will secure this
nation and protect our people”.
Meanwhile, owing to the heightened security threats in the
country, President Bola Tinubu has ordered the withdrawal of police officers
currently providing security for Very Important Persons in the country.
The directive was contained in a statement sent in by Bayo
Onanuga, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, on Sunday.
The president has also approved the recruitment of 30,000
police officers to boost security operations and ensure the presence of police
in all locations.
“Henceforth, police authorities will deploy them to concentrate
on their core police duties,” the statement noted.
Onanuga said the presidential directive was issued at the
security meeting President Tinubu held on Sunday with the police, air force,
army chiefs and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS)
in Abuja.
According to the presidential directive, VIPs who want
police protection will now request well-armed personnel from the Nigeria
Security and Civil Defence Corps.
The presidential spokesman said many parts of Nigeria, especially
remote areas, have few policemen at the stations, thus making the task of
protecting and defending the people difficult.
He said in view of the current security challenges facing
the country, President Tinubu is desirous of boosting police presence in all
communities.
“Already, President Tinubu has approved the recruitment of
30,000 additional police officers. The Federal Government is also
collaborating with the states to upgrade police training facilities
nationwide,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, Sunday’s meeting was attended by the Chief of
Army Staff, Lt General Waidi Shaibu; the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday
Kelvin Aneke; the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and the
Director-General of the Department of State Services, Tosin Adeola Ajayi.
Again, President Bola Tinubu has vowed that those threatening
the peace of the country will be met with the full weight of the law.
The president said this on Sunday, even as he met with heads
of defence intelligence apparatus including the Chief of Defence Staff, Chief
of Army Staff, Inspector-General of Police, Director-General of the DSS, at the
State House.
According to Tinubu, he has been getting regular updates
from intelligence personnel and has directed them to move with speed,
precision, and absolute resolve.
“I am currently in an extended security meeting with heads
of our defence and intelligence apparatus including the Chief of Defence
Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Inspector-General of Police, Director-General of
the DSS, at the State House.
“We are reviewing the latest reports and taking decisive
actions to stabilise the affected areas and protect our citizens. I am
receiving continuous briefings and have directed our security services to move
with speed, precision, and absolute resolve.
“As president, I am fully committed to the security of all
Nigerians. Those who threaten the peace and security of our nation will face
the full weight of the law. Nigeria will prevail,” Tinubu stated in a personal
text.
