Friday, November 28, 2025 - The Court of Cassation of Turkey (the country's top court) ruled that liking photos of members of the opposite s3x on social media can be considered grounds for divorce.
The court determined that a man who likes photos of other
women "undermines trust" in the relationship.
This conclusion is contained in the decision on the case of
a couple from Kayseri, where both spouses filed mutual divorce claims. The
woman claimed that her husband humiliated her, did not allocate money for
household needs, liked photos of other women, and was unfaithful.
In response, the husband complained that his wife insulted
his father, showed excessive jealousy, and left what he considered offensive
comments on social media.
The court of first instance concluded that the breakdown of
the marriage occurred mainly due to the husband's fault. He appealed the
decision, after which the case was reviewed by the court of appeal, which also
found him guilty, indicating that liking other women's photos indeed undermined
trust.
Subsequently, the case reached the Court of Cassation, which
left the decision unchanged.
The woman was awarded 30,000 lira in material compensation
and the same amount for moral damage. In addition, the former husband is
obliged to pay her alimony in the amount of 1,000 lira, although the woman
herself demanded 500,000 lira in compensation and 5,000 lira in alimony.
