Wednesday, November 19, 2025 - Sophie Grégoire has publicly opened up about navigating her life in the public eye as the ex-wife of former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, particularly in light of his new, high-profile relationship with singer Katy Perry.
During a new appearance on the podcast “Arlene is Alone,”
host Arlene Dickinson brought up the publicity surrounding Trudeau dating the
pop star, noting that she admires how the 50-year-old Grégoire manages to stay
“cool” amid the headlines.
Grégoire acknowledged the emotional toll of such a public
separation: “You know, we’re human beings and stuff affects us. Normal,” she
said.
“How you
react to stuff is your decision. So, I choose to try to listen to the music
instead of the noise.”
Grégoire and Trudeau announced their separation in August
2023 after 18 years of marriage. They are the parents of three children:
Xavier, Ella-Grace, and Hadrien. Trudeau and Perry made their romance publicly
official when they were seen holding hands in Paris around the time of Perry’s
birthday in October, following months of speculation and private sightings.
Grégoire, who is also a mental health advocate, stressed the
importance of controlling her own response to external events.
“I’m very aware that a lot of public stuff out there can be
triggers,” she added. “What I do with it is my decision. The woman I want to
become through this is my decision.”
This perspective doesn't mean suppressing emotion, however.
She explained that she allows herself to feel the full range of emotions.
“I’ll let myself be disappointed by someone, I’ll let myself
be angry, be sad,” Grégoire shared. “And I know for a fact how important it is,
as a mental health advocate, to feel those emotions.”
Earlier in the interview, Grégoire corrected Dickinson when
the host referred to her as a “single mom.”
“I’m definitely not a single mom,” she affirmed. “I have a
partnership with a father who has such deep love and availability to his
children.”
