Wednesday, November 26, 2025 - The Nigeria Police Force has arrested and repatriated a 61-year-old Turkish national, Acar Huseyin, who fled his country after being convicted of fraud earlier this year. Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin announced on Tuesday that Huseyin had been convicted by the Istanbul Anadolu High Criminal Court and subsequently sentenced to 14 years, eight months and 10 days in prison. He fled Turkey shortly after the judgment in an attempt to evade serving the sentence.
Hundeyin said the fugitive travelled through the Middle East
before entering Nigeria. “In July 2025, INTERPOL NCB Ankara published a Red
Notice, requesting member countries to locate and arrest the fugitive. Acting
on this request, INTERPOL NCB Abuja initiated discreet intelligence-led
operations which led to his arrest in Abuja,” the statement read.
Following the completion of the necessary documentation and
collaboration with international partners, Huseyin was repatriated to Istanbul
to commence his prison term. Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun
praised the INTERPOL unit for what he described as a highly professional
operation, saying Nigeria would not serve as a haven for fugitives or escaped
convicts.
He added that the police force remains committed to meeting
its international obligations, strengthening police-to-police cooperation and
supporting global efforts to combat transnational crime.
