Nigeria, Russia to partner in agribusiness and animal health sector

Tuesday, November 11, 2025 - Nigeria and Russia are intensifying talks on veterinary vaccine production and livestock development, opening doors for potential investments in Nigeria’s agribusiness and animal health sectors.

At a meeting in Abuja at the weekend, Russian Agricultural Attaché Vladimir Efremov, representing Ambassador Andrey Podelyshev, met with Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, to discuss expanding bilateral collaboration in vaccine supply, animal genetics, and technology transfer.

Efremov reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in closing its vaccine supply gap. He presented updated product catalogues from Russia’s Animal Health Centre, highlighting vaccines designed to withstand tropical livestock conditions. “Several Russian institutions, including the century-old Shchelkovo Biocombinat Vaccine Factory, have developed affordable and stable vaccines suitable for tropical climates,” he said.

He also praised Nigeria’s participation at the Golden Autumn 2025 Agro-Industrial Exhibition in Moscow, where over 40 Nigerian delegates engaged with Russian agribusiness firms and explored partnerships in veterinary solutions and livestock technologies.

Minister Maiha described Russia as a strategic partner in modernising Nigeria’s livestock industry under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agricultural reform agenda. “Our priorities include disease control, feed development, and the genetic improvement of indigenous breeds,” he said, stressing that collaboration with Russia will help achieve these goals.

Maiha also highlighted Nigeria’s large livestock market and improving investment climate, which he said offer opportunities for Russian investors in vaccine production, livestock pharmaceuticals, ranching, and cold-chain infrastructure.

In a related development, Russia will host a diplomatic reception and exhibition on November 25 to mark 60 years of Nigeria–Russia relations, further cementing bilateral ties in agriculture and trade.
