Monday, November 17, 2025 - The Nigeria Immigration Service and the International Organization for Migration have renewed their commitment to strengthening border governance and migration management in the country.
At a strategic meeting held in Lagos with the theme
“Strengthening Strategic Collaboration for Effective Migration Management and
Border Governance,” senior officials from both organizations reaffirmed their
resolve to enhance cooperation, upgrade border systems, and address emerging
migration challenges.
NIS Zonal Coordinator, ACG E. L. Anugwa, described the
long-standing partnership as a model of effective collaboration between a
government agency and an international body.
He commended IOM for its continuous support in improving
Nigeria’s border management capabilities.
Representatives of donor agencies, including the British
High Commission, German Consulate, and Dutch Consulate, also delivered goodwill
messages, stressing the importance of sustained partnerships in advancing
secure and efficient borders.
In her keynote address, NIS Comptroller-General, Kemi
Nandap, said the engagement provided an opportunity to review achievements and
identify areas where cooperation could be deepened.
She highlighted the need for modernized, technology-driven
border systems and applauded IOM’s contributions to institutional reform,
policy development, and operational capacity-building—particularly its support
for the National Border Management Strategy.
IOM Nigeria’s Chief of Mission, Dimanche Sharon, praised the
NIS for its leadership in digital border governance across West and Central
Africa.
He noted that technologies such as MIDAS, e-border
solutions, and improved identity management systems have positioned Nigeria as
a regional reference point.
Sharon added that the meeting would help identify
operational gaps, capacity needs, and priority interventions for the next phase
of the partnership.
The two-day engagement features high-level presentations and
technical sessions aimed at producing actionable recommendations and a joint
roadmap to guide future collaborations.
The renewed partnership is expected to further strengthen
Nigeria’s role as a regional leader in migration management and border
governance.
