Wednesday, November 5, 2025 - Democrat Zohran Mamdani has won the mayoral election in New York City, defeating independent Andrew Cuomo, according to projections by the Associated Press news agency.
Mamdani, 4, who calls himself a democratic socialist, will
become the city’s first Muslim and person of South Asian descent as well
as the youngest in over a century to hold the position.
In his victory speech, Mamdani said: "In this moment of
political darkness, New York will be the light."
"Together, we will usher in a generation of change, and
if we embrace this brave new course, rather than fleeing from it, we can
respond to oligarchy and authoritarianism with the strength it fears, not the
appeasement it craves," Mamdani said later, before challenging Trump
directly.
"This is not only how we stop Trump, it's how we stop
the next one," Mamdani said. "So Donald Trump, since I know you're
watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up."
The Ugandan-born Democratic socialist defeated former New
York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an Independent, and Republican Curtis Sliwa
in Tuesday's election, according to a race call by the Associated Press.
