Thursday, October 16, 2025 - Six local government chairmen in Bayelsa State have declared their support for Governor Douye Diri following his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Governor Diri announced his resignation from the opposition
party on Wednesday, October 15, citing “very obvious reasons” for his decision.
He also revealed that members of his cabinet and the Bayelsa State House of
Assembly had joined him in leaving the PDP.
Shortly after the announcement, six local government
chairmen under the platform of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria
(ALGON) held a press conference at the association’s secretariat in Yenagoa,
where they also announced their resignation from the party.
Lelei Tariye Isaac, chairman of Kolokuma/Opokuma LGA, who
spoke on behalf of the group, said their decision was influenced by the
deepening internal crisis within the PDP.
“We are indeed grateful for the opportunity to serve the
people for the past one and a half years,” Isaac said. “We were elected on the
platform of the PDP, and today, we are aware that our leader, Governor Douye
Diri, has formally resigned his membership of the party. As chairmen, vice
chairmen, councillors, and appointees in the local government areas, we support
the decision of our governor. We stand with him and, consequently, we also
resign our membership of the PDP.”
