Saturday, October 25, 2025 - Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested three suspected vandals for allegedly stealing high-voltage power cables along the Enugu/Port Harcourt Expressway.
The suspects — identified as Chukwu Kelvin (25), Kenechukwu
Ude (25), and Uche Nwankwo (28) — were intercepted by operatives attached to
the Distress Response Squad (DRS) during a routine stop-and-search operation at
about 4:48 a.m. on October 20, 2025.
According to a statement by the Command’s spokesperson, SP
Daniel Ndukwe, the police team recovered lengths of vandalized aluminium cables
concealed with cassava leaves, a large cable cutter, two pairs of rubber
gloves, a black bag containing clothes, and a white minibus with registration
number ENU 450 XK, which the suspects allegedly used for the operation.
“Upon interrogation, the suspects confessed to having
vandalised the cables from electric poles along Ukete Road, Oduma community in
Aninri Local Government Area,” the statement read. “They were transporting the
stolen cables to the New Artisan Market in Enugu for sale before they were
intercepted.”
SP Ndukwe further disclosed that the suspects will be
charged to court once investigations are concluded.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus
Giwa, reaffirmed the Command’s determination to clamp down on vandals and other
criminal elements sabotaging public infrastructure.
He urged residents to continue to provide timely information
to security agencies to aid in the fight against criminality across the state.
