Friday, September 5, 2025 - Yobe State Government plans to establish four remand homes in some local government areas of the state aimed at reducing overcrowding in the existing custodial and correctional centres.
The State Commissioner for Sports, Social and Community
Development, Barma Shattima, who stated this, also said that the four
additional remand homes and custodial centre for child suspects who are
awaiting trial would be established in Damaturu, Nguru, Gashua and Geidam
towns.
He noted that the Potiskum remand home was the only
functional home in the state as the ones in Nguru and Gashua were dilapidated.
He added that the proposed remand homes would offer inmates
access to education, vocational training and other resources to help them
become productive citizens upon release.
The commissioner lamented that the state government is
spending over N14 million annually on the maintenance of the Potiskum remand
home.
