Suspected fraudster nearly lynched in Niger state after attempting to defraud traders




Tuesday, September 30, 2025 - A suspected fraudster narrowly escaped d3ath after he was attacked by an angry mob for duping phone sellers in Kontagora, Niger State.

The spokesperson of the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, said the suspect, Bashir Abubakar, was almost lynched by the mob before he was rescued. 

According to the PPRO, Abubakar entered a shop at New Market, Kontagora and requested to buy a handset and accessories worth over N500,000. 

He allegedly dropped a bag with the shop attendant, promising to return shortly to make payment. 

The shop attendant later checked the bag and discovered it was filled with papers cut into the shape of naira notes.

The suspect also collected two phones from another trader at the same market last year and left a suspected stolen motorcycle behind, promising to come back and pay for the item but he never did.

“On 27th September, 2025 at about 11.30am, Police operatives of 'B' Div Kontagora rescued and arrested one Bashir Abubakar 28yrs of Kebbi State. The said Bashir went to a shop in New-Market Kontagora, and requested for a handset with accessories worth over five hundred thousand naira,” the statement read.

"He dropped a bag with the shop attendant under the pretence to return and pay later, but the bag was checked and it was discovered that it contained ordinary papers arranged like naira notes. 

"In the course of the situation, he was immediately identified as the same person who was involved in a similar situation in the same market in August this year, where he collected two phones of about two hundred and forty thousand naira, and left a suspected stolen motorcycle behind, that he was coming back to pay, but disappeared.

“As a result of this, he was attacked by the mob, but Police operatives quickly moved to the scene, he was rescued and taken into custody for further investigation and prosecution.”
