Saturday, September 13, 2025 -The Anambra State Police Command has launched a manhunt after suspected cultists attacked mourners during a burial ceremony in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area, leaving at least four people dead and about 15 others injured.
The incident occurred late Thursday during the burial rites
of an 18-year-old boy in Ezi Village. Witnesses said the attackers stormed the
compound on motorcycles and opened fire on mourners, causing panic as people
fled for safety.
“They came suddenly and started shooting at everyone,” one
eyewitness told reporters, adding that the attackers fled immediately after the
assault.
Another source suggested the attack was linked to a cult
rivalry, describing it as a possible revenge mission. “Friends of the deceased
had gathered for a wake, and while some were entertaining themselves, the
gunmen struck. Many were shot, and several bodies were later taken to the
morgue,” the source said. While community members claimed more than eight
people were killed, police confirmed four deaths.
Police spokesman DSP Tochukwu Ikenga said in a statement
that investigations had begun to identify and apprehend those responsible. He
noted that preliminary findings pointed to a clash between rival cult groups.
Ikenga assured the public that the command was committed to
restoring order and urged residents to provide information that could assist
the investigation.
