One killed as suspected rival cult groups clash in Ogun

Tuesday, September 23, 2025 - Tension gripped Atan-Ota, in the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, after a violent clash suspected to be cult-related, which left a young man, identified as Moses, dead.

Eyewitnesses in the community, who preferred not to be named due to the sensitive nature of the incident, alleged that the victim was brutally attacked by members of the Aye Confraternity.

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday and was said to be connected to a supremacy battle between rival cult groups that has unsettled parts of the community in recent times.

One of the disturbing videos that surfaced on Monday captured the assailants hacking at Moses’ right wrist with machetes while chanting in Pidgin English, “we are the ones in charge.”

The footage showed the victim lying face down, motionless, as the attackers struck him repeatedly with cutlasses.

Another clip revealed the body of Moses, his wrist mutilated, as heartbroken mourners gathered around in disbelief. Cries of grief could be heard, with one mourner wailing in Yoruba, “Moses, my God.”

When contacted on Monday, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, CSP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the killing with a brief response: “Yes.”
