Monday, September 22, 2025 - The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has ordered transport unions and affiliated associations across the state to stop the unlawful use of union stickers on private vehicles in place of legitimate registration numbers.
General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described
the practice as a flagrant violation of regulatory frameworks, calling it a
serious security infraction and a subversion of lawful vehicular identification
systems.
He stressed that, in line with the state’s security
architecture, all vehicles operating on Lagos roads must be duly registered and
documented through government agencies constitutionally empowered to regulate
and enforce vehicle identification.
Bakare-Oki warned that the proliferation of unauthorised identifiers compromises public safety, weakens law enforcement, and undermines the sanctity of statutory registration protocols. He said the Lagos State Government would not condone any attempt by individuals or groups to evade due process through the use of illicit insignia.
He disclosed that LASTMA, in collaboration with security agencies and other enforcement bodies, would intensify surveillance across strategic routes to ensure strict compliance.
“Any vehicle discovered navigating the roadways under the
guise of ‘Union Sticker’ identifiers, or other unauthorised symbols, shall be
summarily impounded, and the culpable parties shall face full sanctions under
the provisions of the law,” he warned.The agency urged transport unions to
comply with legal registration requirements.
Describing adherence as a safeguard for public safety and
the well-being of Lagosians. It assured that decisive enforcement measures
would be sustained to protect lives, property and the integrity of traffic
management across the state.
